(1940s film adaptations)
Appearance in popular media :
..Sherlock Holmes has appeared in 4 novels and 56 short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle from 1887-1927. This body of work comprises the canon of Sherlock Holmes.
..a stage production evolved from the popularity of the written works in 1899, as portrayed by William Gillette who wrote, directed, as well as starred in the popular productions
..Since 1900, Sherlock Holmes is the single most frequently filmed fictional character with almost 200 film appearances to date. Only Count Dracula comes close to matching his record.
..The most recent major film productions to date are 2 movie features planned for 2009 -- one stars Robert Downey, Jr. (Holmes) and Jude Law (Watson), and is directed by Guy Ritchie with an announced budget of US 80 Million dollars, to be distributed by Warner Brothers.
..The other film in 2009 is a comedy to be produced by Columbia Pictures, and stars Sacha Baron Cohen (of Borat fame).

..In television, the most recent notable adaptation of Holmesian saga is the Granada Television production which ran 41 episodes (each of 50 to 120 minutes) from 1984-1994. It starred Jeremy Brett as Holmes, and 2 actors -- David Burke and subsequently Edward Hardwicke -- as Watson. Regrettably, the premature death of actor Jeremy Brett in 1995 had prevented a complete translation into film of the entire body of work by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
..Further in television, a 2009 60-minute episode is in production by the BBC. It is intended as a pilot for a potential series. A contemporary remake, it features a present-day Holmes and Watson operating in modern-day London. < Click here to see Fun Facts and Trivia >

Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) (DVD) By Steven Spielberg, Stars Nicholas Rowe, Alan Cox
This 1985 adventure directed by Barry Levinson (Rain Man) and written by Chris Columbus (Gremlins) may not have much to do with the Sherlock Holmes of Arthur Conan Doyle's invention, but it is a delightful and somewhat unexpected combination of exciting elements: Victorian-era, foggy-London mystique, Gothic horror, and Indiana Jones-like exotica. Nicholas Rowe plays Holmes as a schoolboy at a boarding academy for young men. Paired with the owlish, reticent young Watson (Alan Cox), Holmes embarks on the solution of a mystery that involves a hallucinatory and lethal drug, and a religious cult celebrating ancient Egyptian rites of mummification. <click to see more>
Exploring the Legend of Sherlock
The Game Is Afoot: Parodies, Pastiches and Ponderings of Sherlock Holmes (Paperback) By Marvin Kaye (author)
This book by novelist/anthologist Kaye is a compilation of good-natured lampoons, clever spoofs and somewhat academic examinations of Sherlock Holmes's cases. No matter what form the considerations take, all are motivated by an obvious affection for the Great Detective. The ponderings include a reflection by Dr. Joseph Bell, who was Arthur Conan Doyle's teacher and the model for Sherlock Holmes. Also included is Kaye's lengthy "Histrionic Holmes," a study of Holmes's skill and technique as an actor... <click to see more>

Thus confined, they're limited to moving limbs and heads, with some being more motile than others. These superheroes are actual historical figures, though, rather than Hollywood heroes.
