..the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes was a lecturer at the medical school of the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Joseph Bell (1837-1911), who employed observation coupled with quantum leaps in logical reasoning to arrive at accurate diagnoses in patients
..the popular image of Sherlock Holmes dressed in deerstalker hat, Inverness cape and smoking a large curved calabash pipe is a result of William Gillete's portrayal in stage adaptations of Holmesian stories dating from 1899. A film adaptation in 1916 further popularized this image of the detective.
